Shri A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre, popularly known as MCRC, is a non profit research organisation registered under Societies Registration Act (ACT XXI of 1860; S.No. 298; 21st September, 1973, Chennai) with its Registered Office at No.3 (old no: 2), Sriram Nagar North Street, Alwarpet, Chennai 600018. MCRC’s ideologies are centred around Science and Technology applications for rural development thereby improving the quality of life of the rural people, particularly the underprivileged and the marginalized.

In the selected districts of Tamil Nadu the main economic activity of the population is agriculture and other works. The total geographic area of Tamil Nadu is 129, 91,322 ha and the net land used for agriculture is 53, 03,294 ha. The income of the labourers depends on daily wages. In districts like The Nilgiris, people work on the tea/coffee plantations and in districts like Coimbatore, people are engaged in works at industries apart from agricultural activities. Through our investigation, it was found that the people are willing to adopt alternative technologies for their livelihood. Therefore, the proposed technologies of the Core Support Programme were improved and disseminated to the beneficiaries through the networking NGOs at various districts of Tamil Nadu which could lead to an establishment of new small business, thereby creating job opportunities and raising the income of people in the local community.
