For achieving the food and nutritional security and livelihood improvement, Pulses, Root, Tuber,
Banana and Leafy greens based nutrition gardens are being promoted through a household
approach and activities are implemented in 4 selected villages in Wayanad district benefiting a
total of 600 families. Besides 30 pulse seed villages and community conservation plots in 4
selected sites in 4 districts and 1 central Germplasm plot at CAbC are being established for
ensuring availability of quality seeds and conservation of varietal diversity.
A home nutrition garden design has been developed with components such as Pulses,
Root, Tuber, Banana and Leafy greens. The selection criteria for the crops/ varieties for the nutri
gardens are based on the nutritional profile of the crops and the health and nutrition status of the
target community. The varieties selected are mostly low input responsive and having adaptability
to vagaries of climatic change and suitable for both structured and unstructured gardens. Some of
the common perennial vegetable crops included in the nutri-garden are Moringa, Papaya, Citrus,
Gooseberry, Ivy gourd and Curry leaf.
