Govt. of Tripura has constructed a large number of low cost community sanitary (toilets) systems for poor rural people and schools but these units do not have any running water facilities for washing of hands after the use of toilets. So to maintain proper hygiene of the user, a low cost hand washing device has been developed by NBIRT under the DST Core Support Project.
The structure of this device is made from locally available bamboo fixed by ropes, a water container (jurricane), soap box and a wooden pedal flap. This device will be kept just outside the toilet making it easy for the user to avail the water very necessary after use of toilet. Keeping in mind, the real poor target groups i.e, the poor tribal people of Tripura, the total system is worth around Rs. 100 making it easily available to them. The life of the product is 3 years and the local artisans have been trained for assembling the system. The use of this system will automatically check the health hazards of the people. This system will help one wash his or her both the hands properly by using his foot on the pedal keeping his hands free as the water flow will start as soon as the pedal will be pressed.
