Sugar industrial effluent treatment and CO2 utilization by Scenedesmus sp.

Wastewater management poses significant challenges for industries, particularly in the context of sugar mills that generate large volumes of effluent laden with pollutants. Effective treatment solutions are critical to mitigate environmental impact and enable the recycling of water for industrial use. A decade-long research of MCRC in collaboration with EID Parry (I) Ltd., Nellikuppam has led to develop pilot-scale, efficient and simple effluent treatment technology using a tiny but mighty organism, Scenedesmus. This tiny microalga adapts and grows well in the wastewater by effectively utilizing the organic contents present in it and the exhaust CO2 from distillery, thereby cleaning the wastewater making it fit-to-reuse.
