MCRC has developed a simple, cost effective method to convert different type of agricultural, industrial and commonly available wastes into charcoal by slow pyrolysis method in the absence of oxygen at low temperature using kiln.  The kiln of different capacity have been  designed (60, 75 and 12 kg) for use of  based on locally available biomass as input material and for ease of handling. Biochar was tested as soil amendment to increase organic carbon, water holding capacity and cation ion exchange capacity in soil and crop yield. Under the DST core support program, biochar kilns (about 30 nos) were fabricated and distributed to selected individual farmers or NGOs or SHGs in Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Sivaganga, Karur, Dindigul, Dharmapuri and Coimbatore. Trained about 7 individuals on production and market of biochar as initiation of the entrepreneur development. Biochar when add as soil amendment in different crops like Brinjal, Bhendi, maize, chilly  and blackgram  resulted in 10-12% yield increase and water retention  in biochar applied fields were in the range of 8-12%
