Solar stills for water (Phase I: 2009-14) Solar stills for water (Phase I: 2009-14)

MCRC developed solar stills for converting brackish water to potable water. MCRC has developed different types of solar stills for converting brackish, sea, or any poor quality water into safe drinking water. Apart from solar water distillation units, designs for solar energy cooking power and steam generations had also been developed. Thoyam, one of the solar still developed by MCRC is a conical shaped solar still, where a Mylar sheet was selected as the covering transparent material (in place of polythene sheet) for its transparency and UV resistant properties. The yield was 3-4 L /m2/day. The recovery of potable water was 60-70%.
