This technology focuses on converting the agro wastes generated from farming operations into valuable products. Initially adopted from ARTI, Pune, in 2006, and later it was modified for easier operation. A portable cylindrical kiln prototype with a perforated base and air vents was developed and tested for efficiency. The kiln ensures uniform carbonization, higher char yield, shorter processing time, and ease of use and maintenance. Studies on different biomass types and their calorific values showed that local biomass can be used to produce charcoal briquettes, providing an income source. These briquettes were successfully tested in households, teashops, laundries, and small hotels in Chennai. In addition to fuel production, value-added products such as incense pellets (sambrani) were made using charcoal powder and natural ingredients. This technology was shared with beneficiaries through five networking NGOs. In each community, four beneficiaries can generate a profit of Rs. 11 per kg of briquettes and Rs. 173 per kg of incense. Awareness programs have been conducted with more NGOs, and dissemination of the technology is ongoing.
