Generally, the papers are made from wood pulp. This leads to deforestation. Secondly, pulping and bleaching of wood requires many chemical treatments and more energy and water. An alternate method of preparing paper from non woody plants such as Hibiscus cannabinus (Kenaf), Lemon grass, Palmarosa grass, Crotalaria juncea (Sun Hemp) and Sansevieria spp. (bowstring hemp) using microbes, Rhodospirillum rubrum, Pseudomonas putida, Streptomyces spp. are in progress. Hand made paper was made from spent mushroom biomass and kenaf fibers. Fungal pigments were used for colouring the paper. Training on hand made paper using the waste paper and converting the hand made paper to useful products like paper bags, clip files, folders, scribbling pads, visiting cards, Tag files were given to beneficiaries through Networking NGOs- EMPOWER, Tuticorin and SAM Foundation, Pammal.
