Training programs on cultivating edible oyster mushrooms are being offered to various beneficiaries, including housewives, who can easily grow mushrooms in their backyards or on shelves by maintaining humidity with wet sand or rags. Locally available lignocellulosic materials, such as paddy straw, banana pseudo stem, sugarcane bagasse, milled and crushed coir pith, sorghum husk, and sunflower stems, could be used for mushroom cultivation. This initiative provides a profitable income source, with beneficiaries earning Rs. 60-70 per kgs of mushrooms. Training programs on mushroom cultivation and awareness of their nutritional value have been provided to self-help groups (SHGs), as well as students from schools and colleges. Over 500 beneficiaries from Cuddalore, Coimbatore, and Kancheepuram districts in Tamil Nadu have benefited from these efforts.
